Seven member municipalities; the County of Vermilion River, City of Lloydminster, Town of Vermilion, and the Villages of Dewberry / Kitscoty / Marwayne / Paradise Valley, in north-east Alberta began meeting regularly to inform and discuss with each other matters of common interest.

In 2002, with the additional incentive of an Alberta Government Partnership Exploration Grant, these forward thinking municipalities formed the Vermilion River Regional Alliance (VRRA).

In 2006 the Village of Mannville and Lakeland College accepted the invitation to also be members of the VRRA.

The purpose of the Alliance is to provide a regional focus for activities in the area, generating projects and acting as a communication instrument for the member municipalities.
